I read an article today, belatedly, from Atticus in the Sunday Times. In a four paragraph feature, the first paragraph uses the word British; the second, England; the third , U.K. and Britain and the fourth and last; U.K. again,all in the same sense as though they were synonymous, each inter-changeable: they are not synonyms! England is not Britain is not the U.K. Voila!

This may not be specific to Wales nor Brittany which is what generally decides my writings but I assure you that it is very apt for my pub at the moment. It is creating bad feeling between certain of my customers and myself. My pub is in the countryside and they have to make an effort to get here then are forced to go out in the wind and rain if they want a cigarette. One of them has even accused me of being a collaborator (think of occupied France).

Diary/Journal

I'm slipping up a bit here, the 27th was my second grandson Glen's 3rd birthday. I got him a card and a present but missed out on the day because of the pub. As I've said more than once the pub is quiet but it isn't necessarily quiet on the road outside. There's a house on the right hand bend in front of the bar that years ago the local council wanted to knock down but it is privately owned. It was bought on the cheap by a couple from Liverpool who didn't stay long but the brother looks after it and every now and again it gets rented out to 'doubtful' people that in their proximity casts a shadow over my pub. I have to be careful now, but apparently there's an unhealthy situation, something to do with drugs apparently, and the present incumbent recently came out of prison after a four month sentence(for what I don't know). Eight o'clock wednesday morning there were seven police cars parked outside with fifteen gendarmes, guns pointing at the house. Nobody was in and within half an hour they had orders to leave and search elsewhere.

Arthur and his companions came face to face with two evil giants who possessed a marvellous knife; Gwennhwyfar would accord a gift in recompence to the knight who would bring it back.Kai went first but he hid; Arthur sent Edern to search for him and he penetrated into the giants' fortress and managed to slay them; Kai, jealous poisoned him; but the two sons of the King of Ireland brought him back to life. Gwalchmai learned of the adventure, accused Kai, and it was Edern who returned the knife to Gwennhwyfar.

Nothing happening in the pub, very quiet, if trade doesn't pick up I'll be another one added on to the 3,382 closed in the last two years (British statistic). The holidays will be starting soon which will mean a few extra customers and on Sunday Feb. 8, I've got music in the bar, a sort of anarchistic rock sung by a half naked 6o year old by the name of Jean-Claude Lalanne a.k.a. Le Prince Ringard. Friday Feb. 13, I've got a group coming over from Britain called 'The Gin Club', they play rock,blues and country; they can be seen on 'My Space". Pretty soon I should be having a group from Plougonven called 'Récidive', also on 'My Space'; look for the album with a dog on the sleeve. Went to the hospital for a consultation on my diabetes, took the results of my blood test, everything is alright except that my body is almost incapable of producing its own insulin. I'll go back in two or three weeks time then they'll decide to keep me on the injections or to put me on tablets;

Arthur took up the chase, the longest, the most epic, the most murderous of his history; she left numerous victims, the wounded,the dead,the sick, the ravaging of cultures and herds, between the ears of Twrch Trwyth were three marvellous objects without which she could do no harm; a comb, a razor and scissors. Arthur exterminated one by one the piglets after epic battles, the decimation of her armies and managed finally to to obtain the three objects. But Twrch herself escaped again and always by jumping into the sea: the spiritual sovereignty is not for Arthur.

Bi-lingual!

  Read the headline, 'Municipality: the bi-lingual wishes'; that is the annual Mayor's address wishing a Happy New Year to all the inhabitants of the village; I instinctively took it to mean Breton and French but then I read that an English local Councillor was allowed to give a translation for her compatriots; that is completely up to them but It's a pity that there was no room for 'Breton' given that it is the first language of the elder inhabitants in this particular part of Brittany. In the 1930's 1,200,000 people spoke the language, then the schoolchildren were forbidden to spit on the floor and to speak Breton, now you can't even get a 'Happy New Year' and do you know what? they don't care! In Wales there's an expression "Cymro gorau, Cymro oddigartref" which means "The best Welshman is a Welshman away from home" I think it applies to a lesser extent now, with every thing that is going on over there, but I remember the Welsh speakers in the town where I come from completely against having the Language rammed down our throats, being totally ignorant of the problem. In some ways it's the same here in Brittany with outsiders sometimes being the most active* and non Breton speakers sending their children to the new Breton language schools.
*An Englishman was the President of the Breton schools movement a few years ago and the most active person around here was born outside Brittany.
