I have a relative (albeit a distant relative) who fought in the battle and lived to tell the tale! George Edward Orchard, aged 21, enlisted in 1876 in Newport with B Company 2/24th Regiment of Foot, South Wales Borderers. I'm attaching a summary of his involvement in the battle. George was 84 when he died in 1940 He was buried with full military honours. I am related to him through my paternal grandmother. I was there an hour and only encountered four visitors. Wonderfully secluded and peace make 'White' a must if you visit South East Wales. A look at the fascinating tiny village of Llanelieu, Breconshire, Wales and a link with America in 1690s. (Awbrey) INVESTIGATING the past is a wonderful pastime in Wales. Turn down any lane in Mid Wales and it may take you way back into history. I had never even heard of, let alone visited, Llanelieu deep in the Breconshire Countryside. A few miles along daffodil covered, 'one track' lanes, through farmyards one comes to a couple of cottages and a church. Two giant old Yew Trees stand at the top of a lane (Ty Du Lane - Black House lane) One still contains (just) the holes giving the clue that this is probably the last medieval 'whipping tree' in Wales. The tree overlooks a Church. This was deconsecrated many years ago but is still in fine condition thanks to the energies of various organisations. There is evidence that a Quaker (A Mr. Awbrey) from Llanelieu was 'whipped' in America in 1693ad. Could there be further evidence of Awbrey's in the church and near the old 'whipping tree?' Perhaps this little video will bring the story to life. An Invitation to Welsh Societies in North America to participate in: Wales Smithsonian Cymru 2009 24 – 28 June and 1 – 5 July As a member of a society which keeps alive Welsh heritage in the United States, I am sure you will be delighted to hear that Wales will be the guest nation at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2009. As many of you will know, this annual, cultural festival takes place outdoors on the National Mall in Washington, DC over the 4 July holiday. The Festival attracts over a million visitors annually and will provide a platform to raise the profile and awareness of Wales in Washington, DC and the wider United States Wales' presence at the Festival presents a unique opportunity for your society to become involved through fundraising. The Welsh Assembly Government and the Smithsonian have provided core funding for the event which will enable a substantial representation for Wales. But in order to maximise this unique opportunity, a fundraising campaign is underway with the aim of extending the number and range of associated activities and to enable a greater number of participants from Wales to attend the Festival. Would your Society be willing to play a part by raising further funds for the Festival? We are hoping that Welsh Societies all over North America will help us raise an extra total of $50,000 by April 30th of this year and there are several ways in which the Welsh Assembly Government and the Smithsonian can help your Society be part of this historic Welsh-American fundraiser Provide door prizes for raffles held at your St David's Day banquet – or at any other fundraising event. Provide copies of Welsh-interest DVDs for holding screenings at which you may charge entry. Crab and Salmon Fishcakes with Minted Yoghurt This is a combination of traditional Welsh fare (the seafood fishcakes) with a classical near eastern sauce. An excellent example of modern Welsh fusion cuisine. Ingredients: 225g cooked crab meat 225g salmon, baked and flaked 225g mashed potatoes (still warm) salt and black pepper, to taste 1 tsp parsley, finely chopped 1 tsp chives, finely chopped 2 egg yolks For the Breadcrumb Coating: 110g flour 225g breadcrumbs 2 eggs 1 tbsp milk salt and black pepper, to taste For the Minted Yoghurt: 100ml cream 100ml natural yoghurt 2 tsp mint, finely chopped Method: Combine the crab meat and salmon flakes in a bowl, flaking them together as you mix. Then add the mashed potatoes (which should still be warm) and mix thoroughly to combine. Now add the remaining fishcake ingredients and mix them in thoroughly so that the mixture binds together. Transfer the mixture to a lightly-floured work surface and with floured hands divide the mixture into 8 balls. Turn these in your hands so that their surfaces are coated with flour. Then, using the palms of your hands, press down on each ball to form flattened fishcakes about 2cm thick. For the breadcrumb coating beat the 2 eggs very well then whisk in the milk. Use the four to cover one place and the breadcumbs to cover another. Gently place the fishcakes first in the flour (ensuring you cover every side) then shake genly to remove any excess before coating with the egg mixture. Transfer to the breadcrumbs and use these to coat the fishcakes. Once more shake gently to remove any excess. Place on a baking tray or wire rack and set in the freezer for 4 hours to harden. At the end of this time melt the butter in a frying pan (or use oil) and fry the fishcakes gently in this until they have heated through and the breadcrumb coating is golden. At this point you can freeze them for later use or you can store them in the refrigerator. When ready to serve make the minted yoghrut by combining the ingredients together in a bowl. Serve the cold sauce with the hot fishcakes. This dish can be served as a starter (which is traditional). It's also possible to serve as a main course, giving each person two fishcakes per portion and serving with boiled new potatoes and fresh garden peas.
