Up in smoke

Regrettably my Pub 'Tavarn Ty Elise', a little bar in the Breton countryside between Uhelgoad (Huelgoat) & Karaez (Carhaix), (Bro Gerne) Finistere, Breizh/Llydaw/Brittany/Bretagne burned down in the early hours of friday February 19, 2010. Thirty years of my life up in smoke, but in spite of that the phoenix has risen again and the red dragon is back.

Lansford, Pennsylvania
It was quite a shock reading this weeks newsletter and the item about the Welsh Congretational Church at Lansford, PA. The attached is the cover of the Restoration Brochure. The late Lt. Col. Alfred J Reese Jr. was the Chairman of the Restoration Committee. I had the privilege in 1996 whilst staying with Lt Col Reese and his wife Faye to be shown this wonderful restoration work. He was very proud to have been able with others to undertake the work. I do have a copy of the whole brochure which he gave me after being asked to sing "Hen Wlad fy'n Nhadau" from the pulpit. It was an honour and privilege to have been called his friend. The whole history of the Chapel is printed in the brochure. It was forst dedicated on 26th December 1850 and the redication was undertaken on 17th August 1986. My only hope is that someone will take up the challenge and refurbish such a wonderful building.
Mi wnaf gopi o hanes y capel os ydych angen cael ychwaneg o wybodaeth.
Llawer o ddiolch,
Bryan - Ysgrifennydd Undeb Cymru a'r Byd

Dragon's Blood - Novel
Dragon's Blood continues the Evan Jones family saga begun in Dragon & Hawk and continued in Celtic Fire, Desert Rain.
Written with Welsh and Spanish phrases, Dragon's Blood explores some dark and ugly episodes in Arizona's history, weaving the adventures of fictional characters with historical figures such as Frederico Ronstadt (singer Linda's grandfather) and Welshmen Samuel and L.C. Hughes of Tucson.
The novels will be available in a number of fine independent Arizona bookstores by the 19th, but those who wish to pre-order their copy from out of state (but within the continental US) can do so by September 15th and get free shipping!

SAN FRANCISCO/BAY AREA WELSH CONVERSATION COURSES
Now brace yourselves, I don't want to shock anyone, but you should not be disappointed if you find that you are actually able to converse in "the language of heaven" after just a short time in class. These classes aren't taught in a lecture style. Instead, you will be meeting new friends and sharing ideas with them from day 1 - all through the medium of one of the most beautiful languages in the world.
These beginning conversation classes will be taught in 4 week sessions with optional "field trip/activity based" practice sessions offered every other week. The first will start in mid September followed by various 1 day courses on specific topics which will be appropriate for Welsh speakers at all levels. So, if you already have some Welsh at your comand you will be very welcome to join in the adventures.
Right now classes are planned for San Francisco but other locations may be considered depending on student demographics. The day of the week/weekend is also flexible based on student needs.
Please call Diana Manzanilla for more information on how this new interesting scheme works!

Cawl Dail Poethion
(Nettle Soup)

This is a traditional soup form the Llyn peninsula in North Wales. It used to be made commonly as a spring soup, incorporating chopped fresh young onion shoots, though it's not often made these days.

Ingredients:
The leaves from 21 young stinging nettle stalks
100g of salted bacon, finely cubed
1.5l vegetable or beef stock
1 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
45g chives or onion shoots
salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:
Place the stock in a large pan and when boiling add the nettle leaves. Continue to boil for 3 minutes then remove the nettle leaves and process in a food processor (along with the chives) until they form a smooth purée.
Add the bacon to a large pan and fry until they release their fats. Remove the bacon and set aside then add the butter to the pan. When it's melted stir-in the flour until you form a smooth paste. Now add the hot stock a little at a time, stirring well to combine after each addition.
Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling until the stock has thickened to your liking. Add the nettle and chive purée and allow to heat through before seasoning to taste. Serve in warmed soup bowls with a sprinkling of the bacon on top. Accompany with a thick slice of warm bread.

The discoloration on certain cards is from the cigarette smoke and open fire due to having been pinned to the ceiling for many years.

Wales United

"If they decide to unite," he said, "they would be completely invincible. This nation would be fortunate....if they could accept one prince, and he a good one." - Gerallt Cymro (Giraldus Cambrensis)

The result was that the king, Henry II, with his mighty army, was forced to retreat, and in his anger he blinded his hostages and burned the churches.

Putting the Record Straight

At a time when the vast majority of the French abandoned their fate into the hands of Marshall Pétin, many Bretons chose, and that as early as 1940, to go to England to continue the fight. At the end of 1940 the Bretons made up 70% of the resistance while Brittany only comprises 7% of the French population. The resistance went on to attract more and more men and women, yet at the end of 1943, only six months before the Normandy landings, the Bretons still represented 40% of the Free French. This is not to forget the resistance in Brittany itself, a vast uprising of the whole people, which retained many German troops in the peninsula, for these, had they been allowed to reach the Normandy front, would have pushed the Allies back to sea. It is also thanks to the Bretons that France, whose authorities had massively collaborated with Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1944, could recover her honour. The brutal repression which was triggered after D-Day against all forms of Bretonness, seems all the more disgraceful. Bernard Le Nail

Joseph Parry worshipped in this chapel as a young boy before going "off to Philadelphia in the morning". One day I received a note from Margaret Roberts, Emrys's wife asking me to volunteer to help to clean it out, which I was happy to do. Later on John Jenkins had an office there and I used to go down to see him for a chat at lunch time."
